Geelani again barred from offering Friday prayers

Expresses concern over prevailing uncertainty

GK NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar, Nov 29: The chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani was again barred from offering Friday prayers today.  “It is the 36th Friday in a row when he was not allowed to offer Friday prayers,” said a Hurriyat (G) spokesman in a statement. Taking a dig at the Chief Minister the spokesman said: “Omar Abdullah addressed a state sponsored gathering at Tral. Geelani was scheduled to address a public rally there but the authorities forcibly prevented him from going there.”

Meanwhile, Geelani while commenting on the prevailing disturbance and uncertainty in the world, said: “Presently no peace and justice prevails and instead it is the reign of terror which exists in every nook and corner of the world. Humanity is being trampled everywhere, innocents are killed, fundamental and religious rights are violated and those who dare to resist against it are being branded as extremists and terrorists.”

“Instead of taking any notice of these accesses and injustices, the so-called champions of human rights are maintaining criminal silence over the brutal killings of innocent civilians,” Geelani said. He strongly condemned the role of West, Geelani said democratically elected government of president Mursi was dismissed with the active support of Western countries and thousands of civilians were brutally killed during the coup.

Referring to the worst situation in Bangladesh, Geelani said, “Jamat e Islami in 1971 played its role keeping in view the larger interests of Islam and Muslim Umah and it was their desire to prevent any more division among the Muslim countries. However, after 42 years the present so called secular regime at the behest of India has declared a war on Isalmists and intends to wipe out the entire leadership of Jamat e Islami.”

Expressing deep resentment and sorrow over the role of Organization of Islamic Countries, Geelani said, “We had pinned a hope that they would come to the rescue and take issue with the Bangladesh government but that did not happen.”

Geelani also expressed deep concern over the drone attacks on Pak – Afghan borders, saying that “though we have condemned the attack against the Malala Yousf Zai, however it is so sad that hundreds of innocent children were killed during drone attacks and so called champions of peace and justice are maintaining silence over it. They do not feel it their obligation to call a meeting of UNO in this regard. This injustice and double standards are the main cause of world unrest and upheaval.”

CHAIRMAN OF THE ISLAMIC POLITICAL PARTY OF MAQBOOZA KASHMIR, MR. MOHAMMAD YOUSUF NAQAS WARNS OF THE NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES AND STRATEGIC INTERESTS OF THE INDIAN STATE IN ERECTING A WALL BETWEEN IDA:JK AND AZAD KASHMIR, ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF PAKISTAN

CHAIRMAN OF THE ISLAMIC POLITICAL PARTY OF MAQBOOZA KASHMIR, MR. MOHAMMAD YOUSUF NAQAS WARNS OF THE NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES AND STRATEGIC INTERESTS OF THE INDIAN STATE IN ERECTING A WALL BETWEEN IDA:JK AND AZAD KASHMIR, ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF PAKISTAN:

Press Release:Date 27 November 2013

Chairman Islamic Political Party, Internationally Disputed Areas of Jammu and Kashmir (IDA: JK), also known as Maqbooza Kashmir, Mr.Mohammad Yousuf Naqash while terming the proposal of erection of wall by India on the forcibly drawn line on the hearts of people of Kashmir a dangerous conspiracy, strongly condemned it and said that India has no moral and legal justification to take such step and it will have dangerous consequences. This conspiracy hatched by India is aimed at isolating tormented people of Indian occupied Kashmir from Azad Kashmir, Islamic Republic of Pakistan (with whom they have deep rooted affinities and relation) and strengthening the false and misleading integral part claims. Mr.Naqash further said that India forcibly thrusted the curse of slavery on the people of Kashmir by forcibly drawing line between Kashmir  and forcibly occupying one part and people of Kashmir are perpetually struggling and supremely sacrificing for dismantling the forcibly drawn division line and for securing freedom from India. He further said that history is witness to this fact that Berlin wall was dismantled for reunion of forcibly divided brothers and this step was people friendly, while as this conspiratorial step by India will be totally inhuman. People of Kashmir will neither tolerate nor allow it to happen and will continue with their struggle in perpetuity till the last drop of their blood for dismantling this forcibly drawn division line on their hearts and for securing freedom from Indian forced occupation and oppression.

Mr. Naqash expressed satisfaction on the release of Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai from American prison and said that he performed well in pleading the case of right to self determination of people of Kashmir before the international fora and hoped that he will continue with its diplomatic activities in this regard in future also with determination as the ambassador of their people.

THE INTERNATIONALLY DISPUTED AREAS OF JAMMU AND KASHMIR (IDA: JK) ARE NOT AN "INTEGRAL" PART OF INDIA AS PROPAGATED BY THE NEW DELHI ADMINISTRATION

THE INTERNATIONALLY DISPUTED AREAS OF JAMMU AND KASHMIR (IDA: JK) ARE NOT AN "INTEGRAL" PART OF INDIA AS PROPAGATED BY THE NEW DELHI ADMINISTRATION: HABIB YOUSAFZAI, CHAIRMAN, KASHMIR DIASPORA ALLIANCE

A SEMINAR CALLED, “KASHMIR DISPUTE: LET’S WORK FOR A PEACEFUL RESOLUTION” TOOK PLACE AT 1380 STOUFFVILLE ROAD, RICHMOND HILL. ONTARIO, L4E9S3

PRESS RELEASE DATED NOVEMBER, 23, 2013

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, ASSLAAM-O-ALAIKUM!

I am going to be rather brief in my comments on the issue of "Self Determination" and Sovereignty of the citizens of the IDA: JK by highlighting just a few points;

1. That IDA: JK is not an "integral" part of the India as propagated by New Delhi administration. Rather, historical facts and religious and cultural similarities clearly attest to IDA: JK’s citizens rightful place as part of Pakistan.

2. The United Nation: Security Council (UN: SC) resolution of 1948 clarifies that the future of IDA: JK will be decided by the "Self-Determination" which is right of the citizens of the IDA:JK. Since the UN: SC resolution has not been implemented in the last 66-year, we should not depend on this international institution solely for the liberation of IDA:JK as it is made up of sovereign states, all of which have interests of their own, and the majority of which have ignored Indian atrocities for their own self-interest.

3. The citizens of the IDA: JK are eagerly awaiting to live in freedom of fear and to be able to control the lives of their present and future generations which will only be possible after Self-Determination.

4. The Special Armed Forces Power Act of India (SAFPI) is the biggest stumbling block in the way of UN: SC's "Self-Determination.

 5. In numerous sessions of the UN: Human Rights Council, resolutions have been passed to "repel" the draconian SAFPI, with immediate effect. For over the last six decades, Indian forces have had complete immunity from any form of limitations which represents law. For example, they can search anyone, illegally enter anybody’s home without a search warrant, they can illegally arrest anyone without a warrant, and, kill anyone based off of simple suspicion. All of these gross human rights violations are legitimized as actions in “the line of duty”. Until this date, more than 200,000 Kashmiris and 270,000 innocent Sikhs have been murdered.

6. "Self Determination" of IDA: JK is attached to the legitimate claims of other territories/states which have been occupied by India. Just like IDA:JK, these areas have also been "struggling to regain their sovereignty". The people of the IDA: JK support their demands of Sovereignty and Independence, in particular the citizens of Sikh Homeland Punjab (Khalistan). The people of IDA:JK must understand, and they do understand that the liberation movement will be far stronger if the oppressed act collectively. Within IDA:JK and abroad, the oppressed must not fall into the schemes of the oppressor and divide amongst themselves in order to delegitimize their very legitimate claims.

7. India must withdraw its forces from the States where these armed personnel are stationed and the armed forces be sent back to their "barracks", with immediate effect. The level of human suffering and death which these soldiers have caused is unimaginable.

 8. IDA:JK is of fundamental concern in any discussion between the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and India as this region is the primary issue which is serving as an impediment to peaceful relations.

9. There have been more than 165 insurgency movements going on in India. These are all fighting for their Sovereignty and illegal occupation from the Indian state. To state this is not to claim that all of these movements have a legitimate claim to the degree of the people of IDA:JK; rather, it is to assert that we are not alone!

I would like to conclude by driving home an extremely important point which I feel is a core issue right now and a disease amongst those who claim to be fighting for the liberation of IDA: JK. We must always be extremely critical of any situation that we assess, and never analyze a situation in strictly black and white terms. Who are our enemies? Who are our friends? These are questions that remain unanswered because at this point it seems as though we have forgotten who our brothers are. We the people of Kashmir are all brothers. As such, we must not divide amongst ourselves and we must not disunite from our Muslim brothers in Pakistan. Along with pointing out the atrocities of others and fighting for the oppressed, we must not forget to amend and be self-critical of our own behaviors. If we are spreading disunity and hate against ourselves and all other human beings, than inevitably we are hurting the liberation movement. Until we unite and stand as one, we will never be able to credibly assert our claims and take the freedom that is ours. Until we unite as one, we will never have any real respect.

Mr. Ken Stone from the Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War, Balkar Singh Heir from the United Front of Sikhs, Nafees Zakaria, Consul General of Pakistan, and, Zafar Bangash all speakers at the event unanimously condemned  the human rights violations taking place in IDA:JK and Khalistan. They also stressed the urgent need for self-determination in IDA: JK as an immediate solution.

Thank you and May God bless you all.

ASSLAAM-O-ALAIKUM!

India did not accept the existence of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, although, it did agree to the partitioning of the subcontinent of India. For instance, utilizing one means or another, it had occupied Manawa, Junagar, Hyderabad, and 42,000 square miles of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. To maintain its illegal occupation on the occupied territory and establish a hegemonic order in the South Asian region, it has further weakened Pakistan by dismembering it in 1971. The Indian state has also not hesitated to play power politics and deceive its supposed allies, the Sikh nation, by first utilizing their man power and after with occupying their territory Punjab, (Khalistan) of August 15,1947 and murdering hundreds of thousands of Sikhs. As such, we must learn from the mistakes of the past and will not repeat them. Those areas which have been liberated are part of Pakistan. All those which have yet to be liberated will by the grace of God also accede to Pakistan. We cannot afford to have any further division and disunity amongst ourselves.

This refers to the statement by the congress chief published in The Greater Kashmir dated November 17, 2013 under caption “Soz praises Mirwaiz, castigates Geelani.”

We cannot liberate Maqbooza Kashmir from Indian occupation without the involvement of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. At the end of the day, Maqbooza Kashmir and its inhabitants both territory and its people are the citizens of Pakistan respectively. Unfortunately, all peaceful protests about putting an end to India’s occupation over Kashmir have been unfruitful. We no longer have any other choice but to use force. I have a question for State Congress Chief Mr. Saifudin Soz.  If all peace talks have failed in the past to bring about a positive change for the Kashmiris, does he seriously believe that farther rhetoric pushing for peaceful talks will help the situation? It is from this logic that we support Syed Ali Geelani’s decision to find an alternative solution to the problem because all peaceful methods have clearly failed. It is relevant to reiterate here that India has not only occupied the State of Jammu and Kashmir, it has also occupied Manawa, Junagarh, Hyderabad, and the Sikh Homeland Punjab (Khalistan). According to figures compiled by the United Nation as well as other Human right organizations, more than 200,000 Kashmiris and more than 270,000 innocent Sikhs have been murdered to suppress their voice for freedom.

Out of Army’s 66 firing ranges, 12 are in JK

State empowered to decide on Tosa Maidan: AG

UMER MAQBOOL

Srinagar, Nov 11: At a time when Tosa Maidan issue has put the ruling National Conference-Congress coalition in a tight spot, it has come to fore that Jammu and Kashmir is home to the highest number of Army firing ranges where thousands of soldiers test small arms to heavy artillery and even Air Force carries out air-to-ground bombing.

Out of the total 66 Field Firing Ranges (FFRs) of Army, 12 are located in Jammu and Kashmir, official sources told Greater Kashmir.

In no other State the number of firing ranges is in double digits. In the list, J&K is followed by Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh with seven, six and five firing ranges respectively. The issue has assumed centre-stage in Kashmir in the wake of Army seeking re-notification of Tosa Maidan, a picturesque meadow in Central Kashmir, as a firing range for 20 more years with locals and civil society urging government to open the area as a tourist resort. The issue is all set to come up for discussion during the Civil-Military Liaison Conference in Nagrota, Jammu, on November 12.

Official sources told Greater Kashmir that a Constitutionally-powerful State like JK is fully empowered to take a call on the matter.Army has asked the J&K government to re-notify 11200 hectares of forest-land at Tosa Maidan as a firing range.

“Several States have out-rightly rejected the demand of Army to re-notify the firing ranges. Even in Karnataka, the government last year de-notified the Bagdad Asmara range prematurely although it was notified as firing range till 2020,” they said.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Advocate General MI Qadri said the “power to grant or not to grant re-notification is with the State government.”

“The power for re-notification lies with the State government who has issued earlier notification. And as such renewal for continuation/ allotment of land is based on a number of considerations which must exist to the satisfaction to the government,” Qadri informed, adding, “It is not a matter of right to claim the renewal,” he said.

Officials disclosed that Defence Ministry has lost nearly 40 firing ranges during the past several decades primarily due to refusal of State governments to re-notify them.

THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT IS THE IMPEDIMENT TO THE PLEBISCITE PROCESS OF KASHMIRIS: HABIB YOUSAFZAI

THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT IS THE IMPEDIMENT TO THE PLEBISCITE PROCESS OF KASHMIRIS: HABIB YOUSAFZAI

ASSALAM-O-ALAIKUM!

Press Release (Brussels) November 11, 2013

The International Council for Human Development and World Kashmiri Diaspora Alliance jointly
organize a press conference to introduce the upcoming Kashmir EU Week in the European Parliament.

The president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has appealed the international community to come forward in support of Kashmiri people for their just cause of self determination and freedom. “It is an indigenous movement of Kashmiris and warrants an unconditional support with a sense of urgency and responsibility”, he said. He said that India had forgotten the promise made by Nehru. He praised ICHD and its leader Ali Raza Syed for playing a great role in the promotion of the Kashmir cause. He dispelled the impression that Pakistan was controlling the matters in AJK. He promised to enhance the awareness building campaigns across the Europe and other parts of the world. He mentioned recently held all parties conference of all the Kashmiris.

While speaking to the reporters in the press conference, the World Kashmiri Diaspora Alliance chairman Farooq Papa said that Indian obstinate attitude of denial of granting the right of self determination/plebiscite to the people of Kashmir does not have an alternative in the local elections, which are held under the Indian constitution, Indian hegemony and in the presence of more than half a million occupational army.

Ms. Laura Schuurmans said that it was unfair that the Kashmiris were excluded from the dialogues between Indian and Pakistan. She told that she had visited the refugee camps in AJK and she could confirm that there was a humanitarian crisis in IHK. She mentioned the crimes committed by the Indian security forces.

Mr. Ali Raza Syed, chairman of Kashmir-Council EU stated that in the presence of draconian laws like Public Safety Act and Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), conduct in elections is mere an act of throwing smoke screen. He told about the One Million Signature Campaign, which had achieved 430,000 signatures so far.

Ms. Farzana Yaqoob, social welfare minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, emphasized to include
women in the movement of freedom. She said that their sacrifices and powers should be acknowledged and promoted. She mentioned the grave issue of Mass Graves in Indian Held Kashmir and vowed that Kashmiris shall raise this issue at every forums. She lamented the fact that the perpetrators of human rights violations were being protected by the Indian state and its black laws such as PSA and AFSPA. She promised that the Kashmiris Diaspora shall come forward as more organized community to raise the awareness about the Kashmir issue.Answering the questions the three leaders unanimously declared that pro Kashmiri dialogue between all political thoughts within Kashmir will be held in Brussels and in Niagara Falls, which shall culminate in a unified voice of Kashmiris. That will aid in resolving the issue of Kashmir peacefully.

The president of Azad Kashmir also asked the Kashmiri and Pakistani diaspora to support the cause of Kashmiris in Europe and North America.

‘NEHRU FELT ISSUE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO UN’

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

New Delhi, Nov 7: After claiming that Jawaharlal Nehru had called Sardar Patel a "total communalist", BJP leader L K Advani Thursday stoked a fresh controversy saying the then prime minister was reluctant to send army to Kashmir in 1947 even as Pakistani troops approached, but the Home Minister prevailed over him.Quoting from an interview of Sam Manekshaw (then a Colonel) by senior journalist Prem Shankar Jha, Advani said in his latest blog that as the tribesmen- supported by Pakistani forces-moved closer to Srinagar, a decision had to be taken on moving Indian forces there. However, Nehru appeared reluctant and felt the issue should be taken to the UN.

Referring to Manekshaw's claim in the interview, Advani said Lord Mountbatten called a cabinet meeting soon after Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession. This was attended by Nehru, Patel and defence minister Baldev Singh. Manekshaw presented the "military situation" in the meeting and suggested the Indian forces be moved there. "As usual Nehru talked about the United Nations, Russia, Africa, God almighty, everybody, until Sardar Patel lost his temper. He said, 'Jawaharlal, do you want Kashmir, or do you want to give it away'. He (Nehru) said, ‘Of course, I want Kashmir. Then he (Patel) said 'Please give your orders'.”

"And before he could say anything Sardar Patel turned to me and said, 'You have got your orders'," Advani said, quoting Manekshaw from the interview to Jha. The Indian forces were then flown to Srinagar to fight the Pakistani forces and the Muslim soldiers of Hari Singh who had defected to Pakistan. "This report, involving Manekshaw and Prem Shankar Jha, provides a clinching confirmation of the difference between Nehru and Patel over the Hyderabad action," Advani said.

On November 5, Advani had written a blog where he quoted from the memoirs of M K K Nair, a 1947 batch IAS officer, to say that Nehru had called Patel a "total communalist" when the latter said at a Cabinet meeting that "police action" will have to be taken against Hyderabad as it was trying to join Pakistan.

Advani indicated that he wrote the blog today to counter the Congress reaction to his last posting, based on Nair's book, that the IAS officer's report about a clash between Nehru and Patel on the issue of armed action against the Nizam is "all bunkum". The senior BJP leader also claimed that Britain sought to thwart Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India. Both the Indian and Pakistani army were headed by British generals in 1947-48.Quoting from a website on Gen Roy Bucher, the then Commander-in-Chief of the Indian army, Advani says he was opposed to police action in Kashmir and told a Cabinet meeting that it is not possible to bring the whole of Jammu and Kashmir under control as the British were supporting Pakistan.

Pakistan suspected that the Maharaja wanted to accede to India and tried to pre-empt his decision by forcibly seizing the state. Gen Bucher told the Cabinet that if his advice against police action in Kashmir was not followed he would resign."There was a silence while a distressed and worried Nehru looked around. Patel replied, 'You may resign General Bucher, but the police action will start tomorrow'," Advani said, quoting from the website. The British did not want a Indo-Pak war, he added.

"The British clearly did not want the whole of Jammu and Kashmir to go to India. There was a widespread feeling in London that if India was in control of areas contiguous to Pakistan, the latter would not survive," Advani said. But the website gives credit to Nehru, saying he had decided to strike at the bases of the raiders in Pakistan though Mountbatten was opposed to this.

HABIB YOUSAFZAI, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE KASHMIR DIASPORA ALLIANCE ASSERTS THAT THE FIRST THING INDIA MUST DO IS PULL ITS OCCUPATIONAL FORCES OUT FROM MAQBOOZA KASHMIR

ASSALAM-O-ALAIKUM!

This article is a response to the comment made by the visiting Member of Parliament from India P Rajeev statement issued at the UN General Assembly, reported by the PTI (Press Trust of India).

The visiting Member of Parliament from India P Rajeev conveniently forgot that division of the sub-continent India was based upon religion. As such, their government has violated the partition plan agreed by them for occupying the Sikh Homeland Punjab (Khalistan) (who staunchly claims that they are not Hindus), and the Muslim states Junagarah, Manawa, Hyderabad and 42,000 square miles of the state of Jammu and Kashmir (also known as Internationally Disputed Areas of Jammu and Kashmir or Maqbooza Kashmir) against the wishes of the inhabitants of these territories.

I am sure you are fully aware that neither the Brahmins nor Hindus are 'trustworthy' in the international politics, dealings with the minority communities of the Brahmins-Hindus democracy, merely of 10% Population out of over 1.2 billion hungry mouths of the alleged Indian democracy.

During Adolf Hitler's time in Nazi Germany, there had been a saying that keeps on repeating a lie ten times; eventually it would like the 'truth'. The Brahmins-Hindus' democracy, indeed, follows the footsteps of the Nazi Germany. Recently, the U S Congressman Dana Rohrabacher was of the opinion in early 2000, that "as far as the Sikhs, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists and minorities are concerned, India is a Nazi Germany for the non-Brahmin-Hindus minorities." So how could one trust the Indians and their demoncrazy?

Since the fateful day of the 15th August, 1947, there has not any Self-Determination has been taken place under the auspices of the United Nation, under the Security Council's Resolution of 1948. Had there been one, please do let me know as I would like to correct myself on the international affairs.

Let the Brahmins-Hindus administration say that they would like to resolve any issue under the Shimla agreement. So be it, but that would only be applicable between the Brahmins-Hindus' administration and the administration of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Here, the major third party is involved. That party is the Internationally Disputed Areas of Jammu and Kashmir (IDA: JK). Without the IDA:JK's presence, neither Brahmins-Hindus' demoncrazy nor the Islamic Republic of Pakistan resolve the issue of the IDA:JK. The world knows it, so do other people of the international administrations that the IDA:JK issue is very much alive as it had been in 1948, following the UN:SC Resolution of 1948.

Besides, the issue of the IDA:JK, today's world, including the UN institutions, is well alive. Let me tell you that the citizens of the IDA:JK will settle nothing than their "Self-Determination and Sovereignty." I would like to let you know, if you do not know already, that the Brahmins-Hindus' Indian armed forces have carried out rapes, massacres, genocides, humiliations and dehumanization, because of what? It has simply because of the "immunity" provided to them under the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSP) in Manipur & other states of Northeast India: Sanctioning repression in violation of India's human rights obligations. The peace-loving people of the world agree in every session of the UN:Human Rights Council that the AFSP) be repelled in order to restore the dignity of the people, i. e., the non-Brahmins-Hindus of India.

Last but not least, keep your 'Shimla Accord' with you. No one needs it. At least not the non-Brahmins-Hindus. The nations of the world are fully aware that the Indian government does not adhere to any laws. It does whatever it wants. It makes and breaks the laws.

ASSALAM-O-ALAIKUM!

PRESS RELEASE NOVEMBER 05, 2013

Chairman Islamic Political Party (jk) Mr.Mohammad Yousuf Naqash while paying glowing tributes to the Jammu Martyrs said that the Kashmir can never forget the sacrifices offered by the Muslims of the Jammu region. He said that on November 5 lakhs Muslims of Jammu were killed by the Indian Forces and Communal Hindu extremists. We cannot forget that black day when our Muslim brothers were snatched from us and killed mercilessly for their inherent sentimental and religious attachment with Pakistan and strong opposition to the forced occupation of Kashmir by India. He further said that the Muslims of the Jammu region have always been at the forefront in the freedom struggle and Muslims of the whole State paid countless supreme sacrifices since 1947 for Freedom from India. So this ongoing movement belongs to Muslims in particular and the Muslims of the Jammu have offered huge sacrifices for the freedom struggle, so they cannot be separated from the valley by any means. We will not in any way leave the pro-freedom groups of the Jammu alone in the freedom struggle as this struggle is incomplete without our Muslim brothers of Jammu as they are our inseparable part. But unfortunately due to the negligence and some mistakes of some pro freedom leaders of Kashmir our Muslim brothers who all are comparatively pro freedom are upset. As such it is imperative to have mutual confidence and coordination between Jammu and Kashmiri Muslims. They had never deterred in offering sacrifices for the freedom movement. He said that the sacrifices offered by the people for their nation will never go waste. He further said the solution to the Kashmir lies only in giving the people the right to self-determination. The countless supreme sacrifices offered by the people have no substitute other the freedom. By offering less than freedom is just putting salt on our wounds. Nothing short of freedom will be acceptable to the people who have been offering sacrifices from the last about seven decades for freedom. Less than Freedom is betrayal with our valiant martyrs and ongoing sacred freedom movement and will be worse than treason. That will never be accepted and tolerated.  He said that the Kashmiri nation is much alive and much possessive about freedom and they will not rest till they get their aim, freedom from India. He also praised the both the opposition and the ruling parties of Pakistan for their extended moral, diplomatic and political support for a final settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the Principle of Self Determination.

Mr.Naqash expressed his heartfelt condolences over the sad demise of the young son of senior journalist Mr. Shahid Rashid and the death of the mother in law of prominent cartoonist and renowned journalist Mr. Bashir Ahmad Bashir. He prayed for the eternal peace of the deceased and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family.

ASSALAM-O-ALAIKUM!

November 4, 2013

It is one of the least known genocides in modern history. It was carried out with such a precision that it is difficult to find its traces, except in the memories of the survivors, and the tales of horror they passed on to their next generations. Around 500,000 Muslims were killed with military precision. It was such an operation that language lacks words to express this offence of demolition of human being. Though the targeted killing had already started in Jammu around mid July 1947, the operation got a fillip immediately after a fleeing Maharaja Hari Singh and his wife reached Jammu on 26 October 1947. An organised carnage was orchestrated to kill Muslims, wherever found or spotted in Jammu. British daily The London Times quoting its special correspondent in India stated that the Maharaja, under his own supervision, got assassinated 237,000 Muslims, using military forces in the Jammu area. The editor of Statesman, Ian Stephen, in his book Horned Moon writes that till the end of autumn 1947, more than 200,000 Muslims were murdered in one go. Horace Alexander wrote in the Spectator (16 January 1948) that the killings had “the tacit consent of State authority” and put the figure at 200,000.

The Hindu Dogra ruler’s main aim was to change the demographic composition of the region by eliminating the Muslim population. Such was the intensity of carnage that in Jammu province about 123 villages were ‘completely depopulated’. Kathua district ‘lost’ almost fifty per cent of its Muslim population. Thousands of Gujars were massacred in mohalla Ramnagar. Village Raipur, within Jammu cantonment area was completely burnt down. The Dogra State troops were at the forefront of attacks on Muslims. The State authorities were also issuing arms not only to local volunteer organizations such as the RSS, but also to those in surrounding East Punjab districts such as Gurdaspur.

The State administration had not only demobilized a large number of Muslim soldiers serving in the state army, but Muslim police officers had also been sent home. In the Jammu city, the Muslim military were disarmed and the Jammu cantonment Muslim Brigadier replaced by a Hindu Dogra officer. Muslims seeking refuge in police stations and Deputy Commissioners’ offices were openly handed over to RSS beasts by the Dogra officers themselves. Meanwhile, Maharaja of Patiala was not only supplying weapons but also a Brigade of Patiala State troops were operating in Jammu and Kashmir, without whose help and assistance, the objective could not have been achieved with such precision. The Times of London reported the events in Jammu with such a front page headlines: “Elimination of Muslims from Jammu”, and pointed out that Maharaja Hari Singh was “in person commanding all the forces” which were ethnically cleansing the Muslims.

That there was a design to change the demographics is evidenced by another well-reported incident. Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehr Chand Mahajan, upon arrival in Jammu told a delegation of Hindus, which met him in the Palace, that now when the power was being transferred to the people they should better demand parity. When one of the delegation members wanted to know how that was possible, Mahajan, pointing to the Ramnagar natural reserve below, where Muslim corpses were still lying said, “the population ratio too can change” like that (“Elimination of Muslims from Jammu” II, The Times, London, 10 August 1948, page 5. See also Ved Bhasin’s interview to Kashmir Life).

Both documentary and oral sources suggest that the crime committed on the Muslims was nothing less than an organized holocaust. Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, who was appointed “Chief Emergency Administrator” on 30 October 1947 could not prevent the carnage. He writes in his autobiography Atish-e-Chinar (page 312) that the carnage got impetus after the arrival of Union Home Minster Sardar Patel, Union Defense Minister Baldev Singh along with the Maharaja of Patiala, a person known for his anti-Muslim bias, in Jammu. The trio met various Hindu organizations and delegations, after which the massacre attained a great momentum. Hindu fanatics, aided and abetted by government forces, started burning down village after village inhabited by Muslims. Women were raped at will. Weapons were distributed freely to marauders from the Kachi Chawni house of Pandith Prem Nath Dogra and motivated by Balraj Madhok.

On 6 November surviving Muslims were told to assemble in an open ground, to be sent to Pakistan, herded in trucks like cattle and killed mercilessly with machine gun fire between the Digiana and Samba belt. Women were abducted and raped. Even the daughter of the legendary Chaudhary Ghulam Abbas was not spared. Many women preferred death than falling prey to the cruel beasts who wouldn’t tire calling themselves as secular people.

On the ground, the killing operations were organized, directed and supervised by Maharani Tara Devi in league with her debauch Guru Sat Dev and the governor of Jammu, Chet Ram Chopra. At the politico-administrative level, Sheikh puts the blame solely on the Dogra ruler Hari Singh and Prime Minster Mahajan. At one point of time, Sheikh had even thought of initiating action against the duo for crimes against humanity (Atish-e-Chinar, page 331). But why didn’t he translate his thoughts into action remains shrouded in mystery. Did he surrender this right before Sardar Patel as quid pro quo for primeminister ship, which came his way in March 1948? As is generally known, the government of India and the Dogra ruler were only interested in conceding him a limited role in a “Mysore type of government”. But later this plan was changed and Sheikh was offered full-fledged primeminister ship. Or was it a result of coercive pressure applied by Patel on Abdullah to imprison his close relative caught red-handed of theft of valuable jewellery in Maharaja of Indore’s (known as Holkars) palace where he was employed?

The other aspect of the carnage was appropriation of properties of Muslims. The Muslim names were immediately erased to conform to new ownership. For instance Urdu Bazar became Rajinder Bazar and Islamia School became Hari Singh High School to conform to the new “ownership”. Almost 95 percent of left-over properties, which should have in the normal course been taken over by the State government, were allowed appropriated by looters and rioters (Daily Telegraph of London dated 12 January 1948).These properties continue to be under the illegal occupation of looters and their descendants and it is precisely for this reason that the Resettlement Bill faces a stiff opposition in Jammu fearing vacation of such properties under a due process of law. Even Indira Gandhi expressed such fears in Jammu in her 1983 election campaign.

Another incident needs a mention here. When Hindu refugees from Muzaffarabad and surrounding areas reaching Kashmir desired to be sent to Jammu or Punjab, local Muslims motivated Kashmiri tongawallas (horse-cart drivers) to transport them to Jammu against heavy odds. Initially 22 tongawallas were hired. They were later joined by many others from the Khannabal-Qazigund rural belt. On return all these poor tongawallas numbering around 90 were massacred near Nagrota. Their only fault was that they made Hindu refugees to reach their destinations safely. What make this holocaust unique is the complicity of State on the one hand and the exemplary treatment of Kashmiri Muslims to its minorities on the other hand, given the grave provocation of Jammu genocide. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was so disgusted with the carnage that on two occasions (27 November and 25 December, 1947), he made mention of it in following words:“The Hindus and Sikhs of Jammu and those who had gone there from outside (referring to RSS goons from Gurdaspur and surrounding areas) killed Muslims there. Their women have been dishonored. This has not been fully reported in the newspapers. The Maharaja of Kashmir is responsible for what has happened there” (Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi, volume 90, page 115 and 298).

It is no wonder, then, that when Gandhi was killed by an RSS supported Hindu fanatic, sweets were distributed throughout Jammu in special thalis supplied from the Maharaja’s Palace. But there have been some valiant efforts on the part of a few Hindus also who tried to save the caged Muslims in Jammu those days. The names of Krishen Dev Sethi, Ved Bhasin etc. top that list. But such instances have been few and far.

Horrific Stories of survivors
Rashid’s father, brothers, sisters, wife, and a son were slaughtered. Malik Abdul Rashid, a survivor from Reasi, currently settled in Rawalpindi, says he was 22-year old when the carnage happened. “Men, women, children were killed in the cruelest manner, maimed, intimidated. The carnage continued for several days. I lost my father, brothers, sisters, wife, and a son,” Rashid said.“I lost all my dears; the genocide has haunted me all my life,” he said.

On 4 November 1947, when Dogra troops entered Reasi, two highly esteemed citizens of the town, Khwaja Amkullah and Chaudhary Aziz-u-Din rushed to the office of then Deputy Commissioner Thakur Gavinder Singh, complaining against the entry of the troops when Peace Committees, comprising Hindus and Muslims, were already in place to maintain peace. Both of them were shot dead in the office.“People were mowed down with machine guns and swords during the night. And those who had survived were assembled in a field where they were put to death. Some women who escaped jumped into Chinab river to save their honour,”Rashid recounts.“Khwaja Ali Muhammad of Bhadarwah who was performing his duties as a public prosecutor at Reasi went to a police station to save his life, but the duty officer, a Dogra, handed him over to the RSS men. They dragged him out and tortured him so much that he begged them to kill him than torture him. But the barbarians cut his fingers one by one and told him ‘we will send your fingers to Pakistan’. He was killed near the court premises in broad day light,” Rashid said.

Rashid said Maharaja Hari Singh orchestrated the carnage to eliminate Muslims from Jammu.“Muslims were not even allowed to have weapons for self defense, but Maharaja distributed arms to the marauders of his community,” he said, adding the killers were trained and armed in RSS camps for the genocide. He said that Maharaja Hari Singh who fled from Srinagar to Jammu on 26 October 1947 ordered his troops to kill Muslims everywhere. “The carnage started in remote villages, and many Muslims fled to towns and district headquarters. But the killers were everywhere. Hundreds of Muslims committed suicide to avoid torture,” he said. The killers kidnapped the daughter of legendary leader Chaudhary Ghulam Abbas, the prominent leader of Muslim Conference. Mistari Ahmed-u-Din hailing from Mast Garh Mohalla of Jammu himself killed his two daughters fearing the Hindu marauders would rape them.

On 4 November Muslims who had escaped slaughter were asked to assemble in a ground near police station in Jammu so that they would be driven to Pakistan in buses. On November 5 and 6, 1947, scores of buses, trucks and lorries, loaded with women, children and old men were taken into the wilderness of Kathua forests where Hindu extremists and armed gangs butchered them like chickens.”‘MY 3 SISTERS WERE ABDUCTED, TWO WERE RECOVERED, AND SURAYA IS STILL MISSING’

Another Kashmiri migrant from Jammu, Muhammad Khan Naqashbandi, said that his mother was killed and three sisters were abducted by the marauders while they were traveling to Pakistan. Two of his sisters were recovered, but the youngest sister Suraya was still missing. Teary eyed Khan said, “My sister is still missing and I don’t know whether she is alive or dead. I survived because I was studying in Lahore when the carnage occurred. No Muslim can forget that genocide.” Naqashbandi said the slaughter was well planned and rehearsed to prevent people from acceding to Pakistan. Muslims were slaughtered at Mavera near Samba on November 5 and the next day carnage was carried out near cantonment in Satvari.

‘OUT OF 6000, 250 SURVIVED’
Abdul Qayum Qureshi, a witness of the genocide, hails from Dalpatian Mohalla of Jammu. Qureshi told this scribe that the blood-bath of Muslims in Jammu province had started several weeks ago but the hunt against Muslims intensified when frustrated Maharaja of the state entered into Jammu on 26 October 1947 and ordered his troops to kill Muslims wherever they can be found. Mohalla Dalpatian was a Muslim majority area where thousands of Muslims from other areas had taken shelter.

“There was a big ground where these refugees were camping. Volunteers were guarding them, but everybody lived in a state of fear. The extremists and Dogra soldiers had besieged the area but they did not dare to enter the area. Muslim volunteers led by a former army official Captain Naseer-u-din defended the camp bravely,” Qureshi said.Qureshi narrated the horrors thus: “Meanwhile a fresh group of refugees arrived but the ground was full so they were accommodated in an empty Haveli (a mansion). But the killers had taken positions in a trench close to the Haveli. And when people entered the Haveli premises, the killers started indiscriminate firing, but the Muslim volunteers fought back. Then a Dogra official, Chetan Chopra, arrived with the message that he wanted to talk to Captain Naseer-ud-din. Around 4 PM Captain Naseer returned saying the administration has announced a ceasefire and assured that the violators will be punished. The ceasefire continued for seven days but the situation remained tense. On 5 November Muslims were asked to assemble in the police lines Jammu. I remember about 26 trucks and buses were present in the police grounds. People were ordered to board the vehicles so that they could be driven to Pakistan via Sialkot border. The Dogra officials circulated a rumor that these vehicles have reached Pakistan. We had absolutely no idea that they were butchered in the Kuthwa and Samba forests.

On 6 November a caravan of refuges in buses and trucks was driven towards the border area. I was also part of this caravan. But after half an hour drive the entire caravan was turned towards Bisna. Around 11 AM all of us, about 6000, were dragged out of the buses. Then they fired at us indiscriminately. The bloodbath continued for nearly three hours; like other people I took refuge in a canal. People hid under thorny bushes and wherever they could. At 3 PM the Dogra officials asked the survivors to come out hiding so that they could be driven to safe places. Having no alternative we came out, and fortunately on the directives of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah we were later shifted to a refugee camp in Jammu. Only 250 had survived. My father was in the Valley and my two brothers were in Mirpur.”
