PAKISTAN MUST ESTABLISH MORE PROVINCES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE:
HABIB YOUSAFZAI, THE CHAIRMAN KASHMIR DIASPORA ALLIANCE

ASSALAM-O-ALAIKUM!

The present setup of six provinces in Pakistan consisting of Pakistan’sKashmir also known as Azad Kashmir (de facto), Sindh, Khyber Pukhtun Khawa, Gilgit Baltistan, Punjab, and Baluchistan has not proven to be successful. Unfortunately, the masses are badly divided and have assumed allegiances to their regional area. After the incident of 1971 wherein East Pakistan was dismembered, these provinces were given too much power leaving the federal government weak. This can be clearly witnessed through the fact that the Kala Bagh Dam has still not been constructed.

As far as Pakistan’s Kashmir is concerned, it is an integral part of Pakistan no matter what the outcome of Maqbooza Kashmir is. It is essential to understand that all of Kashmir is a part of Pakistan for two main reasons; it is a Muslim majority state and the people have already given their verdict on July 19, 1947 to be a part of Pakistan. By keeping it a separate entity, India has not handed over Maqbooza Kashmir to Pakistan for the past 67 years and will not through this means. The illegal occupier India instead constitutionally merged the whole division into the Indian Union. India herself took the case to the UN and now is not honouring the UN resolution. A strong Pakistan is the prerequisite for having Maqbooza Kashmir become a part of Pakistan.

Aside from this, Pakistan has no shortage of enemies with the war in Afghanistan adding fuel to the fire. Even through minor differences, the current provinces making up Pakistan are threatening to secede from the state. East Pakistan presently known as Bangladesh is six times smaller in size yet has 13 provinces. Pakistan should take similar steps by creating at least 108 divisions or provinces. Even if these divisions are based on ethnicity there is still no harm in this as they will become too small to break away from the state. This will have many benefits including having smaller areas which will be easier to govern and a more focused approach to local problems.

A commissioner can be made in charge of the division which will actually reduce the cost and promote some sort of unity. It is well known that half the country has already been lost and we do not want to disjoint the country again. If a few people are not in agreement with this, we must ignore them as either they are naïve or friends of the enemies of Pakistan. This action must take place soon before it is too late and the state is dismembered.
