Govt foils Eidgah march: Kashmir observes shutdown
Mirwaiz, Others under House Arrest

SHABIR IBN YUSUF

Srinagar, May 21: The authorities Tuesday foiled the Eidgah Chalo program of Hurriyat Conference (M) to commemorate the death anniversaries of Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone by putting senior separatist leaders under house arrest. Kashmir observed a shutdown in commemoration of the late leaders and victims of Hawal massacre.Officials said curfew or restrictions were not imposed in any part of Kashmir and the day passed off peacefully. In old Srinagar, contingents of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed at several places to thwart any march or protest demonstration. However, the movement of people was not restricted. Eidgah was out of bounds for people as the area was sealed by police and CRPF.Besides downtown, the civil lines area also observed a shutdown on the call of Hurriyat Conference (M).

In most parts of Kashmir, shops, business establishments, schools remained closed, banks and government offices witnessed thin attendance while public transport was largely off the roads.A senior police official in Srinagar said that Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and some other leaders of the conglomerate were placed under house arrest. The other leaders who were put under house arrest included Moulana Abbas Ansari, Shabir Shah, Agha Syed Hassan, Advocate Shahid-ul-Islam and Zafar Akbar Bhat.Reports of shutdown were also received from Baramulla, Kupwara, Sopore, Handwara and Bandipora towns of north Kashmir. However, reports from these areas added that thin public transport plied on inter-district roads.Reports from south Kashmir said Islamabad (Anantnag), Shopian, Pulwama and Kulgam districts also observed a shutdown.

HURRIYAT CONDEMNS GOVERNMENT ACTION:
Hurriyat Conference (M) has strongly condemned the Government action and thanked people for observing shutdown.A spokesman of Hurriyat (M) said: “The freedom loving people of Kashmir Tuesday observed a complete strike to pay tributes to Shaheed-e-Millat Moulvi Muhammad Farooq on his 23rd martyrdom anniversary and thousands of other martyrs who have offered their lives for the sacred cause of freedom. By observing the strike, Kashmiris have once again shown their resolve with the freedom struggle thereby openly expressing their desire to take the mission of the martyrs forward till it reaches its logical conclusion.”Hurriyat (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, strongly condemned the government restrictions to sabotage the Martyrs’ Week program. He said the program was devised “to pay tributes to Shaheed-i-Millat, Shouhda-e-Hawal, Shaheed-i-Hurriyat, Shaheed Maqbool Bhat, Shaheed Afzal Guru, martyrs of 2008, 2009, 2010 and all the martyrs who have laid their lives for the supreme cause of freedom.”

The Hurriyat spokesman said by imposing restrictions “and creating an atmosphere of fear depicts the sheer frustration of the government as they have miserably failed to suppress the sentiment of freedom rooted deep in the soul of every Kashmiri.”The spokesman said by putting leaders under house arrest, harassing party workers and sealing all roads to Eidgah depicts the helplessness of the government before the people's aspirations. The spokesman added that the claims of democracy and freedom of expression have fallen flat and “it shows how much the government is scared of the freedom sentiment.”Meanwhile, Head of the women’s wing of Hurriyat Conference (M), Yasmeen Raja lodged a strong protest at Rajouri Kadal here against the government ban on Eidgah chalo program and house arrest of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
