‘Mirwaiz Yousuf Shah Was Strong Proponent of Two-Nation Theory; Kashmiris Conscious of History’

Srinagar, May 17: Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday termed Kashmir dispute as a creation of ‘broken promises’ by India and said after partition in 1947, Kashmir by logic should have been natural part of Pakistan.“After partition Kashmir by logic should have been natural part of Pakistan. However, the then Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru promised to provide right to self-determination to Kashmiris. Despite lapse of over six decades, the promise is yet to be fulfilled,” Mirwaiz said while addressing Friday congregation at historic Jamia Masjid here.Elaborating, Mirwaiz said at the time of partition in 1947 it was natural that the political future of Kashmir had to be based on the two-nation theory as proposed by the Qaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
“For that reason Mohajr-e-Millat, Mirwaiz Yousuf Shah not only supported the two nation theory, but he called a meeting of Muslim Conference members and passed a resolution in its favour,” Mirwaiz said.He said those who write about Kashmir history should be careful while penning down the political events. “Kashmiri youth is conscious about history of Kashmir. The movement is in the hearts and minds of Kashmiris who have been offering unflinching sacrifices for the just cause. The dispute can’t be resolved bilaterally through trade and sports ties between India and Pakistan. Kashmiris must be involved as a prime party in any dialogue process between the two countries,” Mirwaiz said.He said till complete withdrawal of troops from Jammu and Kashmir, peace will continue to elude the state. “In presence of troops there is no scope for peace. Instead of confidence building measures, New Delhi has empowered its troops with unbridled powers like AFSPA. India through coercive measures wants to maintain status-quo in the state. But we will through peaceful means resist its suppressive tactics,” he said.
Mirwaiz said during his Pakistan visit last year, PML-N senior leader Nawaz Sharif had assured him that if he assumes power, resolution of Kashmir issue will be one of the priorities. “I hope Nawaz Sharif fulfills his promise,” he said.After his address at Jamia Masjid, Mirwaiz led a massive rally to adjoining Hawal locality to pay homage to 72 civilians who fell to bullets of armed forces during a funeral procession of his father Shaheed-e-Millat Moulana Muhammad Farooq in 1990.On the occasion, Mirwaiz said the sacrifices of Kashmiris won’t go in vain. “During the ongoing Hafta Shouhda (Martyrs Week), we want to show to the world that we have not forgotten sacrifices of our martyrs. Let us take a pledge to take the mission of martyrs to its logical conclusion. This would be the biggest tribute to the martyrs,” Mirwaiz said while the people reciprocated with pro-freedom slogans.
